The 2009 Fly-In: Irv's Thoughts
I would like to thank all of you who came to the Thomasville 2009 fly-in. Speaking for the entire membership of the Thomasville Aviation Club, we enjoy hosting the fly-in and love to see old friends that have been coming for years and meeting new people for the first time.
All of you who were here for 2009 fly-in know that we had a some \what low attendance. We had record numbers of campers and the number of registered aircraft was somewhat higher than 2008. However most airplanes came on Saturday and left on Saturday. Was it because of the weather? We had light rain showers on Saturday, but Sunday was a most beautiful day: blue skies, light winds and warm, not hot, temperatures -- a day that would make you fall in love with flying all over again. Pilots you have the responsibility to check the weather, it’s in Part 91 of the regulations, but this does not mean turn on the TV and listen to actors painting doom and gloom weather. Ever notice that good weather doesn’t sell commercials? I check the weather and teach my students to do so each day, read the weather, interpret and make a decision for go/no go. You can call a flight service station to get a briefer for the FAA version. Personally, I like www.duat.com -- that way I get facts only and I make the decision. I know that the weekend of the fly-in we had low ceilings north of Atlanta in north Georgia and to the South around Ocala Florida. That was too bad, because we missed several airplanes and friends from those areas. Maybe the economy had something to do with our low attendance, but as the cat was heard saying as it sat on a stump eating onions and crying, "Better times are coming". They will come. Thanks to each of you for attending and making our fly-in a success.
We are now planning the Thomasville Fly-in for October 8, 9, and 10, 2010. Make your plans to attend now. Until then, keep your nose in the blue and may your takeoffs and landings be equal.
